In this video, we show you how to create and add templates and template parts using the Site Editor in Greyd.Suite.
How do I work with templates and template parts?
Hi, this is Sandra from GREYD and today I’d like to show you how to create and edit Templates and Template Parts using the site editor in the GREYD.SUITE. So let’s just open the site editor and see what the difference is between these two.
Template Parts are layout templates for different areas of your website, so for example there’s a template for the home page, a template for regular pages on your website but also for example for the 404 error page, archive pages, there’s a blank template without header and footer, there’s a template for search results pages and of course also the single template for post pages. When you click on “manage all”, you will get a description of each template and you can also use this overview to delete or rename your custom templates.
Template Parts on the other hand are – as the name already indicates – parts of these templates, for example the header and footer. If we open and edit for example the home template and have a look at the list view, you will see that the template parts header and footer are included in this page template. So you can even start editing these template parts directly from here. What you need to have in mind is that when you make changes here in the header template part, this does not only affect the home template but the entire website. So that’s very important to know. But of course you can also use the site editor to access all your template parts, using the template library here. So here it’s basically header and footer and here you also get the overview to edit and delete templates.
In addition to editing existing templates and template parts you can of course also create new ones. Therefore just click on the plus and select what kind of template you’d like to create. You’ll be most flexible if you use custom template that you can later select on any page. I can show you how that looks like. You have any regular page, for example sample page, and here on the right you have the page settings, among others template. And you can select whether you want the default page template to be used or for example any custom template or the blank template.
So what I can do now for example is create a second page template with a different header and footer. Instead of using the custom template I could also select “page” here. The difference is that here I would have to select specifically on which pages that second page template is going to be used and I won’t be able to change that later. So let’s just do that right now and start with a pattern where there’s already a header and footer included and I could now just delete this template part and insert a new one. I could just select any ready-to-use template part or I could also start blank here and create a new header directly from here.
That way you can design your website very, very flexibly as you can use different templates for example on the front page than on sub pages etc. with different headers and footers.
At last, one tip or two tips from me: If you want to learn more in detail about for example how to create and design for example header and footer, please have a look at our Helpcenter where you will find a dedicated tutorial video on that. And also, if you want to access your templates, you don’t have to do that from the site editor. You could also in GREYD.SUITE use the template menu here on the left where you can find all your WordPress templates, your template parts, reusable patterns and also your GREYD.SUITE Dynamic Templates.
